The questions you need answered before embarking on a multi-cloud transformation journey
Who internally needs to manage a company’s multi-cloud provision and transformation strategy?
Multi-cloud will usually fall under either the organization’s IT leadership or the CIO, depending on how the enterprise is structured. Ideally, the CIO or IT decision makers lead a team of executives, so that all the stakeholders can contribute and ensure that IT and business strategies remain aligned.
Will we be tied down with a single cloud provider for all our workloads?
Today, most enterprises are leveraging cloud services from one or more providers, and many will be managing several, while maintaining existing on-premise systems and, potentially, a private cloud.
I don't have the resources to manage a cloud transformation. What are my options?
This is a common challenge and most businesses choose to work with an expert partner – a Cloud Service Aggregator such as Burhani – that can integrate and package a range of cloud services, managing the other providers and their Service Level Agreements (SLA). This reduces much of the burden and complexity of managing those services, though steering will still come from the IT department or the CIO.
How can organizations make these multiple cloud solutions work together? Can they really be integrated?
While there can be technical hurdles to, say, integrating data from a private cloud with applications running on a public cloud, these are far from insurmountable. This kind of data orchestration isn’t easy, making it another area where the expertise of a service aggregator can be particularly useful. Some multi-cloud vendors have years of experience in handling data orchestration across on-premises, public and private cloud services.
How can enterprises decide which platforms to run their applications or store their data on?
Organizations have a range of options. Gartner, for example, recommends a comparison across eight key categories (see box). By establishing the requirements of the application in each category – and comparing how different vendors stack up in each one, the enterprise can find the best fit for that specific application.

Can you move workloads across the multi-cloud environment?
This depends on how you develop or migrate applications, and whether you use vendor-specific tools or technology, but in many cases the answer is yes. It’s particularly likely if you use container technology to host and run your applications (see below). The ability to move workloads helps companies avoid vendor lock-in, and this is where open-source platforms hold a clear advantage. They make interoperability and migration easier, especially when compared against other cloud services which are reliant on proprietary APIs. In the latter’s case, working with these ‘closed’ technologies can make it more difficult for businesses to quickly move workloads from one cloud service to another.
What impact does a multi-cloud approach have on governance and data security?
Generally, a very positive one. A lot of the security concerns surrounding cloud are disappearing, as organizations realize that even public cloud has clear entry and exit points and easily audited dataflow, with options for multi-factor authentication to secure access.
Are there any other potential benefits or risks for cloning cloud infrastructure across different environments?
Beyond business continuity or proximity, the ability to clone makes it easy to switch environments. There’s no risk of vendor lock-in when you can run applications in another vendor’s environment. The transition can be seamless. The risks, are low provided the applications are tested thoroughly on each environments, and the data integration is carefully orchestrated to ensure that applications can access the data they need to and there’s no conflict on the data side.
What role does container technology play across a multi-cloud solution?
Container technology can play a vital role in multi-cloud. By wrapping small application workloads in portable, executable packages you make them incredibly easy to deploy, scale and move. Container technology is a great fit for multi-cloud because once an application is migrated or developed to run in a container, you can run it on any environment that supports that container format. You can develop an app in the public cloud, move it on-premise, then scale it out across a multi-cloud solution.
How are cloud updates managed?
This varies on a cloud-by-cloud basis, both in terms of how they’re managed and whether the business or the vendor is responsible for updates; while the vendor may be responsible for infrastructure updates, removing some of the strain, the user will normally be responsible for the applications and operating systems running on top of that infrastructure. However, if the application management is outsourced, even this workload can be pushed elsewhere
How do you decide which workloads should run from public or private clouds?
In some cases, enterprises can be constrained by security requirements or existing architecture, but in others it comes down to finding the most cost-effective way to run a specific workload with the best performance. The advantage of a multi-cloud approach is that you can deploy or move applications to the environment that suits them best, with the option of moving them later.
Are all workloads right for cloud, or are some still better off running on-premise?
There are fewer and fewer applications that can’t be run in the cloud, or where running them in the cloud simply isn’t cost-effective. Beyond applications that demand ultra-low latency and heavy system resources, there are some that may suit different environments at distinct stages of their lifecycle. For instance, some organizations might run a line-ofbusiness application in a private cloud for development or test purposes, but move it on-premise for production use, either for security or performance reasons. The strength of multi-cloud is that it gives companies flexibility.
How do costs work across multiple cloud vendors?
This varies on a vendor-by-vendor basis. Usually, the business will have its own subscription and contract with each vendor, and needs to work out any software licensing issues direct with them, though a multi-cloud provider and integrator will have reseller agreements with some cloud vendors. Obviously, the more vendors an organization works with, the more challenging it can be to maintain visibility and control over all the costs. Here the strengths of a Cloud Service advisor such as Burhani come into play, as they can negotiate lower charges and harder SLAs with multiple vendors to their customer’s advantage, and help organizations stay on top of their overall cloud spend.
What impact can a multi-cloud strategy have on TCO?
Potentially, an even bigger impact than a straight move to a public, private or hybrid cloud environment. Working with different vendors offering different compute and storage options at different prices enables organizations to support each application in the most cost-effective way, while avoiding the dangers of vendor lock-in. Instead of trying to make all applications work effectively on a single platform, organizations can go for the best-of-breed option for each specific application. Going for a multi-cloud strategy can also bring cost savings for organizations trying to extend their global reach. If you have applications that need a local instance in each territory to maintain performance, it’s much easier to distribute workload across multiple clouds across each territory than set up new environments around the world.
